How nature works

Living systems capture energy, transform matter and connect the outputs of one process to the needs of another.

Nature offers a useful reference for designing productive infrastructure. The connection to inversion is an engineering analogy: look for usable flows, connect compatible processes and account for the energy required to keep the system operating.

1. Capture an incoming flow

Photosynthesis uses sunlight to build organic compounds from carbon dioxide and water. Plants and phytoplankton thereby provide an energy-bearing resource for other organisms. [1]

2. Connect production and consumption

Growth, feeding, respiration and decomposition move carbon between organisms and their environment. An output can become an input elsewhere, subject to the receiving process and its conditions. [1]

3. Keep the energy balance visible

Earth receives solar radiation and emits energy to space. Material cycles operate within that continuing exchange. Heat release accompanies energy use; an engineered system also needs an identified energy input and an account of its losses. [2]

4. Apply the analogy to infrastructure

A treatment plant can combine water purification and energy recovery. A heat network can connect a usable heat source to a customer. Generation, storage and demand can be coordinated so that output reaches a useful destination. The engineering task is to match quality, timing, distance and quantity.

5. Add the commercial relationship

A useful physical flow becomes income when a customer pays for it and the operator retains value after costs. This requires metering, an agreed price, operating rights and settlement. Nature supplies the design analogy; the project supplies the financial evidence.
